Hi. I am Jen's daughter, Bri. I am creating a blog about bottled water because I have loved nature for a long time. But I discovered that the environment right here and everywhere are being threatened by not only global warming, but pollution when bottles are burned instead of being properly recycled.
I didn't know that the water bottles were big problems for both nature and our nation until 2009, when I found out about Container Recycling Institute and what they had to say about water bottles. I soon found out a lot about what bottled water is doing to all creatures' health and environment, specifically those in the ocean. Last year I was asked by my teacher to create a speech about some kind of injustice. I wrote a speech and presented it to my class and some peoplein student government at my school.
I have so much more to tell you about bottled water, how it affects our country, its water supply, and how it's putting our oceans, health, and natural environments in bad shape. Looking forward to making our nation and the world a healthier, plastic bottle-free place.
Below is the original speech I wrote about plastic water bottles.
Use of Plastic Water Bottles
Did you know that it can take nearly seven times the amount of water inside a bottle just to make the plastic bottle itself, and according to the Container Recycling Institute (CRI), it takes 1.5 million barrels of oil per year (enough to fuel 100,000 cars for a whole year) to make enough water bottles for people in the United States alone?! I stand here today to urge you to stop drinking from plastic water bottles because CRI also says that 88% of the empty plastic bottles are thrown away, and not being recycled. That’s 30 million bottles a day! The injustices of bottled water are not only that it creates toxins when produced and disposed of, but the labeling is inaccurate and deceiving.
Years ago, the first bottle company made plastic water bottles for convenience… and bottled water soon become the most popular thing in stores, restaurants, health clubs, vending machines, and public events. But little did they know that they were creating a public health crisis! It has become the most toxic trend in history…damaging our health, our earth and many species of wildlife.
Last year, the people in America drank 615 million gallons of Aquafina tap water in plastic bottles, at the cost of $4.00 per gallon. The industry newsletter last year estimated that U.S. consumers spent $15 million on bottled water! What a waste! It’s tap water!! And the bottling companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, to name a few, aren’t required to write on the label whether it’s filtered or not-it’s like a lie. Tap water is more regulated and forty percent of bottled water is only tap water. So why drink it out of plastic? I calculated that if just this class alone eliminated the use of bottled water-not only would we reduce the number of plastic bottles made by 1,440 in a year, but we would save 630 fluid ounces of water from being wasted to make the plastic.
Bottled water use is an injustice because when plastic burns in landfill fires, it creates very toxic substances that pollute the air and cause health hazards when inhaled, making people ill all over the world. And…some companies, like Fiji water, have also bought or leased the only clean water sources in many remote areas…while the people who live there have very bad and polluted water to drink. Most bottled water companies make claims that they have “pure spring water” and they don’t tell where or when they got it, or if it is filtered or not. Most is just plain tap water. How can they get away with that? Another injustice is that when animals swallow the plastic because they don’t know any better, it creates a choking hazard. Leatherback turtles have been known to stop eating or drinking and die from starvation due to plastic. I study wildlife and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. I want to keep our planet safe from toxins and waste for us and for them. I will be extremely sad if we carelessly destroy Earth…Animals and ecosystems could die and you and I will have nothing to enjoy, love, observe, or do outside in the beauty and legend of nature. And it will be our fault for letting it happen when we knew we could have done something…something so simple and easy like this.
So if you drank just regular tap water, think of how much money, plastic, and fuel you could save per year! And at the same time you would keep our planet safe.
Some pessimists claim that they can’t change the world and we should just keep using plastic water bottles because the water tastes good and it’s convenient. I say a little extra effort we can change the world. It isn’t too hard. My family has not bought water in bottles for over 2 years. We take our own reusable metal bottle and drink tap water. We travelled all the way across the USA and the water tasted great most of the time.
We can change the world and reduce the rate of global warming on this planet one step at a time right now. Bottle bills are a proven way to capture beverage bottles and cans for recycling. They can help reduce waste disposal costs, reduce litter, and save energy and natural resources by regaining deposits for some bottles and returning cash to people when they properly recycle. Also, using reusable water bottles reduce the amount of plastic used and disposed of.
We can change our planet today. Stop using plastic water bottles and save our environment. It’s easy, you’ll see.

Try to not buy plastic water bottles and get the water from your faucet or a drinking fountain if out in public or at school. Please help me make our world last!! I want our world to have healthy babies and not have many suffering and dying from cancer.
This is very important to me because I sent the speech to the governor of MA and President Obama and haven't heard back from them! Spread the word to everyone and save our planet today.
Thanks, Bri
